Casablanca

Casablanca

Casablanca was founded at the beginning of the 20th century and is Morocco's principal commercial town and the second largest town in Africa. It was modelled on the French city, Marseille, and is the most Westernised of all Morocco's cities. The most impressive monument is the magnificent Hassan II Mosque, the world's  largest mosque with one of the world's largest minarets. Overlooking the ocean, it was completed in 1993 by King Hussan II. There are also various beach clubs, each with freshwater swimming pools, snack bars and restaurants. The Casablanca Bar in the Hyatt Regency Hotel is the only place in the city that recalls the eponymous film starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman; it has a piano bar serving cocktails and the walls are lined with film memorabilia.

Morocco

Morocco

For a truly Moroccan experience, make sure you visit Djemma el Fna. This huge square in the old town of Marrakech is where locals meet and sell their wares. Once dusk falls this exotic square bursts into life with snake charmers, acrobats, dancers, musicians and fortunetellers looking to entertain and entice you. If sun, surf and sand are more your thing, Morocco has the best beaches in North Africa. Head to Essaouria to experience a traditional Moroccan resort and some of the best waves around and if you have a chance try a desert safari, it will be the experience of a lifetime.

Tangier

Tangier

Overlooking a vast sweeping bay, Tangier is the traditional gateway to Morocco. Though no more than 15 miles across the Straits of Gibraltar from Europe, this is a cosmopolitan city that stands on the threshold of Africa. Its world of minarets and domes, ancient casbah (once the sultan's walled palace and gardens) and animated souks express the rich part-Arab, part-African heritage of the city.
